Media Release
Past press releases from my publishers have been non productive, shotgunning media that do not target my desired reader audience. I doubt that anyone who subscribes to "knitting quarterly" is interested in memoir about "the old navy." Will the Media Release company be releasing to a selected list of interested parties or just firing and falling back?

Good points, Bob!
We have been talking with PRWeb.com. You can go out and look at them. They provide a template and you can choose the audiences that you prefer from their site. There are others that we will investigate if it seems that there are enough people looking for this kind of service...and if we find that by getting enough volume we can truly reduce costs for our members.

I would like a little more info about the program.
Media Releases Poll
I wrote a comment, saved, but doesn't yet show up. I'll check back.
Poll: Media Releases
I'm with "Moon" on this. Although I'm not yet a published book author -- I've been on both sides of the desk (1) getting news releases as a newspaper reporter/columnist, and (2)sending them as a PR counselor to some Fortune 500s as well as a freelancer on behalf of clients.Never have I NOT used a targeted distribution list. I used the then-called PRNewswire as well as my personal, constantly updated personal media list.
I can't assume that most MWSA members know how to write a news release as I know some have others do this. However, I do assume all maintain a list of specific-to-them publications, electronic media, professional and civic organizations, and other TARGETED audiences. This is a rifle approach versus a shotgun one.
And with a maintained media list, it's much easier to make the oh-so-important, prioritized one-on-one meetings, including a get-to-know one BEFORE sending news releases.
Well, I've babbled on. If MWSA has a method for collecting members' targeted media lists, perhaps whatever hired distributor could take these into account.

BTW: where is spellchecker?
PRWeb, the company that first approached us with this
allows you to target your audience by region and by topic. You can also do more extensive packages focusing on websites and specific newspapers and radio shows...and less. It's all available as part of their service. As I said before, there are other companies that we'll check out as well if there are enough folks interested.

As a publisher...
This is a great opportunity for both the publisher and the author!
Publishers like being able to announce new releases.
Authors should be putting out press releases as often as they can - for their speaking engagements, signings, special events, news that pertains to the subject they write about, and on and on...
*The first year Torpedo was out, I probably put out over a couple dozen press releases.
I would really encourage authors to be putting out press releases/announcements as often as possible.
PRWeb does offer some free services, but their paid options offer much wider audiences. It would be well worth it for us to jump on an opportunity like this. The more who want it the cheaper it is across the board for all of us!
How aggressive do you plan to be with your marketing this year??
PRWeb pricing for individual releases
can be quite expensive. The idea is to negotiate a contract that would reduce this service down to something we could each afford. Here's a link to the site to give you an idea of how extensive this service is. Remember that this is no guarantee that people will come to your event or buy your book, but it does get your name out regionally, nationally, and internationally. http://service.prweb.com/pricing/compare-packages/
