No More Bull: A Dr. Gil Tailor, DVM Mystery
Veterinarian Gil Tailor takes a temporary job in a small Colorado town to escape his painful past. But his past gets there first.
Dr. Gil Tailor spends two drunken years trying to get over the tragic death of his wife and the disappearance of his best friend. He takes a short-term job at Spanish Peaks Veterinary Clinic near La Veta, Colorado to get his life in order. He's been there only three days when he is asked by Huerfano County Deputy Sheriff Jarmillo to identify some uncovered bones. When Gil arrives to carry out the identification he is shocked to find the bones in a buried stock trailer - his stock trailer - the one that vanished two years ago with his best friend and a $100,000 Longhorn bull.
Deputy Jarmillo makes it obvious that he dislikes Gil and suspects him of some sort of criminal conspiracy. Shortly Gil is accused of killing his best friend, the prized bull, a valuable race horse, half a herd of dairy cows and one local son-of-a-bitch. Jarmillo even questions the death of Gil's wife.
Gil digs deep to keep himself from falling back into the drunken depths of depression in order to save his reputation, career and eventually his life. While performing the day to day duties of a veterinarian, it is left to him to discover the real perpetrator of these crimes. It's damn sure Jarmillo won't help him.
Could the killer be Owen Hansen, the owner of the bull? Hansen runs a large Longhorn ranch near Brush, Colorado, two-hundred-fifty miles north of La Veta. He is a nationally known cattle expert and financial manipulator. His pious and pompous demeanor rankle Gil, but it seems Hansen has lost much and gained nothing from the crimes.
How about the Holder boys - two local toughs? They raise Longhorn cattle, know their way around the area and have been known to get crosswise with the law. Plus they seem to delight in bullying Gil and those around him. They certainly do everything they can to make Gil appear guilty.
Maybe it's the former Texas oilman and now Longhorn rancher Tonka Morgan who is behind the deaths. He owns a fancy ranch east of Walsenburg, less than twenty miles from La Veta. It's known that he's had bad dealings with Owen Hansen. He comes from a hard and dangerous life in the oil patch - a place where men solve their own problems any way they can. Maybe he's getting revenge and sees Gil as a likely candidate to take the blame.
Author John Sharpe keeps you guessing right up to the dramatic conclusion. Gil confronts his adversary under the pelting blows of golf-ball sized hail while dodging the slashing horns of a huge Longhorn.
Set in today's West this book is packed with all the action and suspense you'd expect from a story overflowing with Longhorn cattle, bucking horses, rough and tumble cowboys and cute but tough cowgirls. You'll want to go out for a drink with these characters after you finish reading. Even if you've never been west, saddled a horse or handled a lariat, Sharpe's writing puts you there and makes you feel like you're one of the hands.
