Item Description

1968, man, that is a year that I will never forget. I was living on a gun boat in the swamps of Vietnam. I was 27 years old, married, and homesick. How in the world did I get in this mess? I graduated from high school in 1960. I wasn't going to college, and I wasn't married at the time, so I thought that Uncle Sam would come looking for me. Why he waited 7 years, I have never understood. All through the 1960's, I was trying my best to get into the music business as a singer or songwriter. By 1968, I had planned to e in Nashville, Tennessee living the good life. How could you want something so bad and it not happen? But, here I am in the swamps of Vietnam. I am living like a wild animal. Now who's going to hear my music in the swamps of Vietnam? This story has as many twists and turns as some of the back roads here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The story has two main characters: War and Music. I know they sound like strange bedfellows, but one helped me tolerate the other one. There were three weapons that I depended on in Vietnam. They were a M-79, a 50 Caliber Machine Gun and a 12-string guitar. My address is 1097 Medium Boat Company, 9th Infantry Division, Dong Tam, Vietnam
